Check back here regularly to find out what's going on at PAST LIVES.
Our latest bookings for family history shows are now listed on our Events page - I look forward to meeting some of you at these events.
2018 already seems to be passing at high speed. PAST LIVES are continuing to be very busy with client research, as well as exhibiting at various fairs throughout the country and getting our museum set up ready for our first exhibition - hopefully opening around mid-March. See our Events page for details of forthcoming fairs and exhibitions that we will be appearing at, and our Museum / Archives page for details of opening events and the exhibition schedule for 2018.
PAST LIVES have started 2018 on a high note with a move - only along the corridor - to a new office suite which gives us the space for our museum exhibitions, and to make our archival collections available to researchers. More information will follow soon.
December has been a hectic month with the launch of our Museum funding appeal for the purchase of display cabinets. It has been a successful campaign with both financial and stock donations coming into our premises, and also cash donations via Crowdfunder. The lease on the museum premises begins on February 1 so we will then begin assembling the first exhibition. Watch this space and our Events or Museum pages for further information on our programme for 2018.
So, to end what has been for PAST LIVES a very busy and eventful 2017 - a year of excitement, intense but pleasurable work, but also some sadness at times - I wish all clients and colleagues a very happy festive season, and a safe and peaceful New Year. Looking forward to working with you all again in 2018.
We have launched a Crowdfunding appeal to raise funding to go towards the purchase of extra display cabinets in the museum (see below) so that we can display our vast collection of artefacts both safely and securely. We would appreciate any contribution - large or small - that you may like to make to this fund. You can contribute at https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/past-lives-social-history-museum-project/
The link is live until 24th December.
The month has begun with the last few days of our exhibition at Carnegie House, Bridgend. The exhibition has been very busy all week and our collection of baby-related material has been extremely well received. Sadly, the final day of the exhibition also coincided with the funeral of a close friend and very generous benefactor to PASTLIVES archival collections, Mike Stokes. The legacy left to us by Mike will be used in exhibitions - both permanent and temporary - enabling his memory to live on for generations to come. Thank you Mike. RIP xx
By the end of the month, our long term plans to open a social history museum started to fall into place with the acquisition of exhibition facilities at our business premises. This will enable the permanent display of some of our archival collections of historic artefacts and documents. We will be working closely with local schools, youth groups and associations, and adult societies to provide exhibitions of local or of specialised interest. Watch this space for further information coming shortly.
PAST LIVES' latest publication from the '...In the Family' series - A New Baby ...In the Family - was launched at the Oxfordshire Family History Show at the Marlborough School, Woodstock on 7 October. We promoted the book with an exhibition of antique baby gowns, antique and vintaage baby greetings cards and photographs, plus other vintage ephemera and books. Photographs from the exhibition can be seen on the Publications page.
PAST LIVES will exhibit this collection again at Carnegie House, Bridgend, Mid Glamorgan for a week from the end of October to the beginning of November.
September is a very busy month for PAST LIVES. We have already attended the family history fair at Bristol run by Bristol & Avon Family History Society where we had a great day with customers and clients - both existing and new. We also attended the fair at Carmarthen organised by Dyfed FHS where our stand attracted a lot of attention from buyers.
You will find photos from some of these events at the top of this page and on our Events page.
We are now preparing for several social history exhibitions that we have coming up in the next few weeks. Our latest publication - due to be launched in Oxford at the beginning of October - is now ready to go off to the printers. You can find information about this book on our Publications page.
PAST LIVES are thrilled and feel very honoured to have had a large archive of objects - ledgers, accounts books, advertising signs, surplus stock, and much, much more - from a local shop which traded from 1880 until 1980 donated to us in the last few days by a descendant of the original owners of the shop. The collection will be used for social history exhibitions, either in full at exhibition venues or in part at family and social history shows. The collection will also form the centrepiece of a book which is currently being compiled for publication early next year. Photos of the collection to follow shortly.
PAST LIVES move into new business premises went really well a couple of weeks ago and we are now settled in. We have a lovely office where we can meet with clients, and we have conference facilities that enable us to run our courses 'on-site'.
